Black History Month Celebration Benefits Scholarship Fund

(Jan. 28, 2009)—The Lawnside Scholarship Club, Inc., will honor three outstanding local residents at its first Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 6 p.m. in the Wayne R. Bryant Community Center. Tickets to the semi-formal dinner are $45.

The honorees are Mrs. Alice G. Smith, Miss Kitti Smith and the Rev. James A. Benson, all of Lawnside, who share a commitment to education.

Sharon Whitaker, president of the Scholarship Club, said the three are fittingly the first to be honored in what will become an annual Club tradition. “Miss Smith, Rev. Benson and Mrs. Smith have dedicated much of their lives to promoting educational excellence and cultural awareness. The Club and our larger community owe them a debt of thanks. This program is one small way to show our deep appreciation for a job well done,” Mrs. Whitaker said.

Artrice Williams, a co-chairperson of the event, said, “The evening will allow the Club to put its energy into sponsoring a different kind of celebration to achieve our constant goal – providing much-needed money for higher education to our residents.”

In addition to tributes to the award recipients, the program will include music by the Sonny Keaton Jazz Trio. Tender Touch Catering of Voorhees will serve a buffet dinner.

The Lawnside native is the founder and director the Valley Bible Church and School in Lawnside which also houses the Benson Multi-Cultural History Museum.
